Congratulations! You’re on the road to college and soon you’ll be moving into your new dorm. Though it’s hard to say goodbye to summer it’s always exciting to plan out how your room is going to look for your dorm.
The possibilities are quite literally endless for the themes you can use for your dorm room. Dark and moody, rainbow and artsy, classic pastels, you can be as imaginative as you want. Or you can go with a pre-set theme and work from there.
One of the more popular themes hinders on a “glamourous” facade. It’s all about luxury, all about living in style and comfort. Looking fancy even if you aren’t feeling fancy!
If your dorm room is looking good it will make you feel better as well, no one wants to come home to a grubby-looking bedroom. So here are some of the things you should buy to spice up your style when it comes to decorating your dorm.
- Pink bedspreads and comforters
- Get a faux-fur ottoman
- An eye-popping center rug
- Wall art galore
- Lots and lots of accent pillows
- Vintage themed storage trunks
- Knitted blankets
Pink bedspreads and comforters
The color pink lies in the lap of luxury. It’s delicate but it’s bold and stylish. Pink is anyone’s color, so don’t be afraid to tap into it when buying things for your dorm room, especially when considered blankets, bedsheets, and comforters.
If you’re feeling afraid of the color try starting with the bed only. It’s a bold move, to have your bed decorated all in pink but you’ll soon get used to it. And a light pink shade, pastels all the way, can really brighten up an otherwise dark room.
Pink implies a softness, a decadence that we often don’t experience every day. If only we could all live in a royal castle with pastel-painted walls and fruit tarts and cute little puppies running under our feet. Alas it’s not meant to be, but you can bring the spirit anyway.Â
This is your official notice to get some pink in your life and on your bed for your benefit.Â
Get a faux-fur ottoman
An ottoman is probably one of the best things you can get for your dorm that a lot of freshmen don’t think about buying. When you’re living in a small space, you need to make the best of every inch that you have. So why not have a stool and storage in one? That’s basically what an ottoman is.
Usually, they’ll come folded up so you can store them in your car without taking up too much space when you’re moving out to college. And then all you have to do is stretch them out and put the top on.
You can get a plain ottoman, they come in all different kinds of colors. But if you’re trying to show off try one with faux-fur. It’s over the top, it’s crazy, and it’s totally fun to get your hands on.
Try not to hold any dark drinks over it though, getting a stain out of this ottoman will not be fun but if you’re safe with your food and your liquids then having this stylistic aspect in your room will be worth the risk.Â

An eye-popping center rug
So most dorms are going to come with carpet, not hardwood floors. Carpet is cheap and you can put it everywhere without much hassle. But that doesn’t mean you can’t add a little zest to your room overtop that old ugly-toned flooring your college has given you.
A center rug is there to add color where before, there wasn’t any. Also if you're a little squeamish about sitting down on the floor without a barrier well here is your way to do so.Â
Fluffy faux-fur rugs are very much in fashion at the moment, and they serve very well for the glamorous aesthetic. White is very royal-esque but it is very easy to stain, so if you’re a messy person you might want to stay away from that color choice and other lighter shades.Â
In all truth, as long as you get a rug that’s within your color scheme, it’ll look good with whatever you’ve bought for your bed, your walls, your desk, etc.Â
It’s a more personal touch to a room that can often feel a great way away from home. Something that not everyone thinks to bring when going to college, but if you do it’ll add even more character to your room.Â
Wall art galore
There is nothing worse than a bare and empty dorm room. Sure you have your bed and your desk and your lights but without anything on the walls? It looks too clinical, it’s not your space, it could belong to anyone else.
So wall art is a must, and if you’re going in the glamorous and chic direction there are certain kinds of wall art that you should consider getting.
A small mirror for one would be great! With some metal detailing, a circular mirror to hang on your wall for decoration is something unique and it looks very expensive if you get a good-looking one.
Often in the glamorous theme for wall art, people like to put up pictures of faraway places that invoke a sense of royalty, classiness, and exoticism. Paris is a tried and true example, there are plenty of Eiffel Tower motifs you can buy to put up on your wall.
But why not try something more out of the box? How about Tokyo, Sydney, Rome, Rio De Janerio? There are plenty of places in the world to branch off of as your theme. Just pick your favorite and get searching.Â
Lots and lots of accent pillows
You have the regular pillows you sleep on, which with a nice pillowcase can be an eye-popping touch to your bed, but then you have the throw pillows that don’t serve any purpose at all really except for decoration. But don’t you want your bed to look good?
One pillow that ranges into the throw-pillowish category is a “husband” pillow or a bed rest. Shaped like an outstretched armchair, this pillow sits on your bed and props you up as you’re working or sitting, so you don’t have to lay down completely if you don’t want to.Â
These pillows are handy, but if you want to go full-on glamor the best kind of pillows you should get are the ones that don’t do much but look pretty.Â
Pillows with ruffles, pillows with sparkles, pillows with floral prints, all of these are examples of accent pillows that could serve you well. Try not to go overboard with the number of colors you choose. Stick to a theme and stay with it, maneuver within a two to three settled color scheme.Â
Vintage themed storage trunks
Here’s generally what happens when you head off to college your first year. You’re very excited, and definitely nervous too, so you overpack and bring a bunch of stuff that you could have left at home, and now you don’t have anywhere to put it in your teeny-tiny dorm.
Lucky for you there are strange trunks to take care of that for you, and these vintage-themed ones? They look really good.
We have a variety of storage trunks but these “armored” ones have that “distinguished” and classic feel to them. It feels like you took them right out of a penthouse in Paris where they’d been sitting in a walk-in-closet wall to wall with beautiful clothes and shoes.
Now you don’t have to store clothes here, the wardrobe or the dresser your school provides you with will serve plenty well for that. Instead, you can store your snacks in here, all the dry perishable goods that won’t go bad.Â
Or perhaps your extra set of blankets and sheets. Or if you’ve brought a bunch of cleaning and bathroom supplies with you they could go in here as well. Literally whatever you need stored can fit, and when it’s closed it looks cool and organized on the outside.Â
Knitted blankets
It’s time to snuggle up with some blankets! When it’s cold and the heat hasn’t kicked in the dorms yet it doesn’t matter what kind of blanket you have as long as it’s keeping you toasty. But in terms of looks, there are ones that cater to style better than others.
Knitted blankets work in a variety of different ways. For a more rustic theme, they carry a sense of coziness, reminiscent of wintertime festivities. But they also just look better sometimes, because they seem to be homemade when they’re knitted.
The best thing to do for a glamorous themed dorm is to get a knitted blanket in a wild color you wouldn’t think of before.Â
A pink knitted blanket, a yellow one, green, or purple. You can even buy knitted blankets nowadays with a bit of glitter in them if you want to kick it up a notch.Â
When you bring all of these elements together into one, it’s guaranteed that your room will be transformed. Separately it might not seem like they’ll do much, but they're a powerhouse when put in all the right spaces.
Make sure to take before and after photos of your dorm as well! It’s quite a sight to see what you can do in a day when you put your mind to decorating your room.
